Schumacher is opening up a new tuning avenue on its world-championship-winning 1/10 2WD buggy: the Cougar LD3 gets an optional steel chassis, sold as a conversion kit. The stated goal is twofold — lower the centre of gravity and free up more flex, two levers the original carbon plate cannot exploit as far.
A 1.2 mm steel chassis for the Cougar LD3
The plate is 1.2 mm thick. By moving from carbon to steel, Schumacher gains on two fronts: the metal’s higher density concentrates mass as low as possible in the car, and the thinness of the plate allows significantly more longitudinal flex. On a 2WD, where traction depends directly on how the chassis twists and releases energy, that is a tuning parameter in its own right.
The kit is not limited to the plate. It includes carbon fibre side pod stiffeners as well as 3D-printed alloy front stiffeners. These parts are removable, so the driver can modulate overall stiffness track by track, removing or adding stiffeners instead of swapping the whole chassis.
Designed for bumpy Astro and carpet
The manufacturer is clearly targeting medium to high grip surfaces. According to Schumacher, this configuration excels “in bumpy Astro conditions with medium to high grip, as well as on carpet tracks”. That is consistent with the logic of the product: the grippier and bumpier a track is, the more a soft, low chassis helps keep the tyres on the ground and absorb irregularities without unsettling the buggy.
Conversely, on dry low-grip dirt the original carbon plate remains the default choice. The point of this kit is precisely to offer a second option rather than a permanent replacement.
Availability and European dealers
The Cougar LD3 steel chassis kit is announced as available from Schumacher dealers. In Europe it is listed at Wartelle Shop, Donuts Racing and RC Team among others. For drivers racing the Cougar LD3 on Astro or indoors, this is a welcome factory option, cheaper than a second complete kit and reversible in a few minutes.
