The Reedy format came to the Herts Nitro Model Club over the weekend of 2 August 2026. The British club, one of the country’s premier off-road venues with its three tracks, set aside its usual race programme for a full day of heads-up 1/8 buggy racing.
The Reedy format applied to a club race
The Reedy format principle differs from classic qualifying heats: drivers race each other directly, head to head, and the grid for the next round follows from the previous round’s standings. A system that rewards consistency and wheel-to-wheel racing rather than the perfect solo run.
After three rounds of qualifying on the club’s dirt track, two men pulled clear at the front: William Carolan, driving a Team Associated, and Lewis Jones, powered by Reds Racing. The two top seeds settled it in the fourth round for the win. The event drew 26 entries for 25 drivers.
The day’s results
In the A final, Lewis Jones took the win ahead of William Carolan and Max McDonnell. In the E-Buggy class, victory went to Antony Williams, followed by Paul Tapsell and Luke Bennett.
The report, written by Jim Thompson, chairman of the club, praises Mark Garrett’s work in race control. HNMC says it wants to gather driver feedback before running — and refining — this format on a future race day.
